Are you as sick of social media as I am? Fake news, inflammatory trolling, and the inner thoughts of those you would never want to know the inner thoughts of have left me loathing social media.
But, a fellow film buff turned me on to Letterboxd. It’s a nifty social-media site and mobile app that let’s you track your movie viewings and much, much more. Letterboxd allows you to create lists of movies and rank the items in the list. Creating these lists allows you to do things like create your own top movies of all time, top movies of 2017, favorite comedies, or any other list you can think of. This is the kind of social media I am looking for.
I am using Letterboxd for new movie discovery and for identifying classics that I want to watch but never have. This is where the social aspects come in. You can browse lists created by others and follow/friend others on the site and the activity feeds of those other users show up on your home screen.
I have been trying to also rate and leave short reviews of the newer movies that I have seen, like the film festival gem Gringo. I find the review from my friends and followers help me choose my next film. Heck even seeing a movie on certain friends top 10 list is enough reason for me to give the film a viewing without any context to the subject of the film.
